    The Thirteenth Division (十三番隊, jūsanbantai), also known as Squad 13 in the English Dub, is one of the Gotei 13, headed by Captain Jūshirō Ukitake.

    Organization

    The 13th division's organization is peculiar; the Captain (Jūshirō Ukitake), due to his weakened health state, firstly gave much of his administrative work to his Lieutenant, Kaien Shiba. After the Lieutenant's death, there has yet to be a replacement for Kaien and administrative duties are assumed by the division's 3rd seat pair. It's also notable that the 13th division is the only one with two 3rd seats and no Lieutenant.

    No special duties have been noted for the 13th Division.

    Barracks

    13th Division Barracks

    Like all the other barracks, the 13th Division Barracks house the offices and living quarters of the Shinigami of the 13th. The Barrack grounds all contain the Ugendō (雨乾堂, Rain Dried Hall) Quarters, which is set aside for use by Jūshirō Ukitake, the captain of the 13th Division. He is known to rest there to recover from his frequent bouts of illness. The pond around the Ugendō Quarters is filled with Koi stolen from the Kuchiki Family Manor by Yachiru Kusajishi. Orihime Inoue trained in one of the 13th Division training grounds with Rukia Kuchiki.

    Current

    • Jūshirō Ukitake - Captain of the 13th Division. He has been the captain of the division for over 200 years.
    • Kiyone Kotetsu - Current Co-3rd Seat of the 13th Division, a position she shares with Sentarō. She along with Sentaro share the responsibilities of a Lieutenant. younger sister of Isane Kotetsu.
    • Sentarō Kotsubaki - Current Co-3rd Seat of the 13th Division, a position he shares with Kiyone. He along with Kiyone share the responsibilities of a Lieutenant. son of Jin'emon Kotsubaki.
    • Rukia Kuchiki - Rukia is a Shinigami that was assigned to protect Karakura Town. Former Protege of Kaien Shiba. Due to intervention from her older brother, she is an unseated officer even though her power is enough to get her a position as a seated officer.

    Former

    • Kaien Shiba - Former Lieutenant of the 13th Division. He was possessed by the Hollow, Metastacia. Eventually, his body later became a part of the 9th Espada Aaroniero Arruruerie. (Deceased)
    • Miyako Shiba - Former 3rd Seat of the 13th Division. She died at the hands of a Hollow, Metastacia. She was Kaien's wife and someone Rukia looked up as a role model. (Deceased)

    Recruitment

    Because of Captain Ukitake's gentle nature, the soldiers of the 13th division all have a steadfast unity. The 13th Division is also said to have a warm, supportive atmosphere.
